How much does website development cost in Australia?
Updated 10 August 2026 · 7 min read
Website development pricing in Australia is famously vague. The same brief can come back at $1,500 from an offshore freelancer and $40,000 from a Sydney agency, and neither number tells you much on its own.
Below are the ranges we actually see in the Australian market, what pushes a project between them, and the running costs that rarely appear on the first quote.
Typical price ranges in Australia
These are project prices in AUD, excluding GST, for work delivered by an Australian developer or studio.
- Landing page or one-pager: $900 – $2,500
- Small business brochure website (4–8 pages): $2,400 – $8,000
- Custom-designed business website with CMS: $8,000 – $20,000
- E-commerce store (Shopify or WooCommerce): $6,000 – $30,000+
- Custom web application or booking platform: $20,000 – $100,000+
What actually drives the price
Page count matters far less than people expect. The real cost sits in decisions, custom design and integrations.
- Custom design versus adapting a template — usually the single biggest line item
- Copywriting: whether you supply the words or the studio writes them
- Integrations: payments, CRMs, booking systems, inventory, accounting
- Content volume: 200 products is a different project to 12
- Accessibility, performance and SEO requirements written into the brief
- Who manages the project, and how many rounds of revisions are included
The ongoing costs most quotes leave out
A website is not a one-off purchase. Budget for these annually so year two doesn't surprise you.
- Domain name: $15 – $40 per year for a .com.au
- Hosting: $10 – $80 per month depending on traffic and stack
- SSL certificate: usually included with modern hosting
- Maintenance, updates and backups: $80 – $500 per month
- Content updates and new pages: hourly, or bundled in a care plan
- Email, analytics and marketing tools: varies widely
Cheap builds and what they cost later
A $700 website is rarely a bargain. The common pattern is a page-builder template stuffed with plugins: it looks acceptable on desktop, scores poorly on Core Web Vitals, breaks on mobile, and can't be extended without a rebuild.
The expensive part isn't the original build — it's paying a second developer to untangle it, plus the leads lost while a slow, hard-to-navigate site was live.
How to compare quotes fairly
Ask every quote the same questions and the differences become obvious quickly.
- Is the price fixed, or an estimate against an hourly rate?
- Who writes the copy and sources the images?
- How many revision rounds are included, and what happens after that?
- Do I own the code, the domain and the hosting account?
- Is SEO groundwork — metadata, schema, sitemap, speed — included?
- What is the support arrangement after launch?
What we charge
Our business website builds start at $2,400 for a focused multi-page site and are quoted at a fixed price after a short scoping call. Larger custom development and e-commerce projects are quoted per brief. You own everything at the end.
